Lord Murugan, commonly known as the "Tamil God", is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi and is worshipped by Tamil communities throughout the world.

Divine Description

Tamil sangam literature glorifies Murugan as the "Red God seated on a blue peacock, young and beautiful". Lord Murugan has many names, such as:

  • Subrahmanya - The auspicious one
  • Shanmukha - The six-faced deity
  • Kaartikeya - Son of the Krittikas
  • Skanda - The warrior god
  • Kumara - The youthful one
  • Devasenapati - Commander of the divine army
  • Saravanabhava - Born in the forest of reeds
  • Guha - The mysterious one
  • Swaminathan - Lord of Swami Malai

Hindus believe that the presiding deity of this kali yugam is Lord Murugan.

His weapon, the spear or "Vel", symbolizes:

Therefore, Murugan is called "Kaliyugavardhan" - the one who blesses and protects devotees in the Kali Yuga.
