Sri Murugan Society of Alberta

Guidelines

The Board of trustees are glad that it is your turn now to host Ganesha Murti in your home. For the benefit of everyone interested in our society’s activities and to receive the blessings of Lord Ganesha Murti we will be encouraging other members of the Sri Murugan Society to have the Murti in their homes until we build a temple.

The Following guidelines will assist you while you have the Ganesha Murti in your home:

  1. The Ganesha Murti should be taken to your home after the bhajan on the day that is schedule for your family. You need to be present at the bhajan venue at 4:30pm.

  1. Prior to taking the Ganesha Murti home, you can decide what items you want to take with you and these items need to be returned when you bring Ganesha Murti to hand over to the next host.

  1. The Ganesha Murti should be kept in your home for the duration assigned to you (generally one month). In keeping with the Hindu tradition, the Ganesha Murti should preferably be placed as face East or North.

  1. You should not be giving the Ganesha Murti to anyone else under any circumstances without consulting with the trustee of the society, during the period that is assigned to you.

  1. During the time the Ganesha Murti is at your home, if any devotees are interested in visiting the Ganesha Murti to pray, the trustees will request the interested devotees to contact you and make necessary arrangements to visit the Ganesha Murti at a time convenient to both parties.

  1. To obtain a hosting schedule or to request any changes, please contact any one of the trustees. The trustees will come up with an alternative plan to accommodate any requested changes.

  1. You are requested to bring the Ganesh Murti to the Temple on the next bhajan date, by 4pm. This will give enough time to setup the Alter for the 5pm bhajan.

  1. You must perform regular pooja/prayers with your family and friends when you have the Ganesha Murti at your home. This will help to foster unity and community sprit among the devotees and help us to achieve our goal of building the Temple faster.

  1. Please take extra care when you lifting the Ganesha Murti. The Ganesha Murti is approximately 35lbs. in weight. Holding the Ganesha Murti at weak points, dropping it or hitting it against another object may damage the Ganesha Murti. For this reason, you have to be extra careful when transporting the Ganesha Murti between the Temple and your home. In order to minimize this risk, the Ganesha Murti will be given to you placed on a wooden Altar.

The Following are the Guidelines for taking care of the Ganesha Murti and the Altar:

  1. Keep the Altar clean at all times.

  1. Keep the door of the Altar closed when carrying or transporting the Ganesha Murti.

  1. The Altar comes in two pieces:

    1. One solid base, on which the Ganesha Murti is seated

    2. A removable cover which could be detached from the base by unlatching the hinges (there are 6 hinges).

  1. Always carry the Altar by lifting from the bottom of the base. Use the upper handle (recess) only to remove the top of the Altar. Always maintain the vertical position when you are lifting the entire Alter with the Ganesha Murti.

  1. Make sure all the latches are properly closed prior to lifting the Altar.

  1. Open all the latches and gently lift the upper part of the Altar, without touching the Ganesha Murti, in order to separate it from the base.

  1. Make sure the wooden base and the removable cover are kept dry at all times.

  1. If you have to sprinkle water during the pooja, please use a plastic sheet or paper towel to prevent the wood from getting wet.

  1. Always wipe any after that falls on the wood after the pooja.
